S.Domenico bell tower

In this lighting design proposal for a bell tower from 1400, light focus on the enhancement of the historical, cultural, environmental, and aesthetic qualities of the monument. Light is the tool to discover architectural details, structure, volumes, and surfaces as well as the medium to reestablish a unified vision of the object. The main goal was to perpetuate the values and features of the monument from day to night.

The bell tower becomes a theatrical actor coming from the daily scenography to perform in the nocturnal one.The keys strategies of the project are the historical investigation of the monument and the intention of the author, points of view analysis, light pollution regulations, national restoration guidelines and lights equipment details. Projectors have been placed in order to increase the values of the architectural elements, the mass of the monument and the relations between its empty and solid parts.

Respecting regulation and guidelines for historic monuments, artificial light perpetuates the image and values of the bell tower, during the night. It is not an attempt to replace the sunlight, but it's an intention to bring the monument to future generations without visual interruption.
