Our architect director Giuliano was nominated for a residency of 3 months in the famous cultural center EHBK in Amsterdam, well known as OT301. The building has a rich and colorful history during which many different functions, users, and architectural changes were going in succession. It was built in 1932 as a school for train drivers than in 1968 it was converted into a film Academy and in 1999 it was squatted by a group of artists which initiated a rich noncommercial program of cultural activities. In order to save the building from demolition, that was the decision of the municipality to give life to a bicycle path, artists decided to legalize it and give birth to EHBK, Eerste Hulp Bij Kunst, First Help By Art.

Granted with a subsidy of 770.000 euro, artists began a massive renovation and set up programs of music, art, dance, theatre, film, workshops, vegan food and other experimental events that still today are attracting thousands of people, making OT301 a must-see spot in Amsterdam. Inspired by such history, Giuliano, during his three months residency, studied the entire building and all the structural changes it had during years, in order to understand the identity it reached. Giuliano analyzed documents, translated traces on the walls, interviewed resident artists and participated in their activities.

This process allowed him to focus on the relation between self-creation of local communities and architectural development, a mutual involvement which has not been thoroughly and extensively investigated during past years. "You are here", the name he gave to his project, aimed to re-connect both objects/spaces with people and people with people, through a reciprocity of formal and informal. An experimental approach where different disciplines, different identities, environments, and strategies try to balance themselves in order to reach an organic unit.

The aim of the architect was not to give EHBK defined plans for a key renovation but create new channels for his members to think and portray a new building image for revolutionary ideas. Through his drawing and sketches, he wanted to stimulate a process of re-thinking and re-challenging the conventional. Giving priority to design, creativity, and typical features of the squatting scene "You are here" takes into consideration only public areas (key spaces of building vocation) of OT301 building re-designing them according to members stated needs such as functionality, creativity, identity, sustainability, and technology. The intent was not to give EHBK the right answers to questions but to create new questions and wonders.

Have a look also to Giuliano's project, Go green, about a roof garden design for the same building.
