The philosophy “meer met minder” of the architect Klingeren in the early 70’s placed him ahead of his time due to his experimental plans and ambitious vision of functions mixed inone building under one roof.

Since then ‘t Karregat has become dated and unmanageable. The vision of LEVS is to restore the spirit of the original ideas giving the building once again a vibrant and multifunctional heart.

The main intervention is in the center with a partially open roof in order to protect the outdoor space and bring more light in. The inner and the open courtyard represent the new heart of the building.

All the functions are connected to them and are based on the original concept of space and colors. The facade surrounds each block where a distinctive color and material express its own identity.

The roof has a surface of 6.800 m²: half of which will serve as a water container, the other half is covered with solar panels. The umbrella structure of the pillars is used for natural ventilation and together with a thermal storage of heating and cooling will give space a regulated climate.

Gpatelier took part of the design team in this competition. Giuliano assisted the team leader in developing the concept, he graphically composed the architectural solutions and strategies (schemes, sketches, renderings, sections, and elevations) and he created a scale model.
